Have more time? Consider an excursion to Harpers Ferry, WV. An hour west-southwest of Frederick, Harpers Ferry is home to a stretch of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. Hop on and follow the blazes! It is a ton of fun! Hiking not your thing? Visit The Point and see where the Potomac and Shenandoah meet. In town, check out John Brown's Fort and visit a few of the museums. Try some historic candy while you are at it!

Prefer the city? Visit the nation's capital, just an hour southeast of Frederick. See the iconic monuments and memorials that define D.C. on a walk through the National Mall. Step inside one of the many Smithsonian museums for a rich educational experience: You cannot go wrong with the Museum of Natural History, and the Museum of African American History is exceptional. For a little variety, make your way to the National Gallery of Art or the National Portrait Gallery. Both are incredible and so worth the visit. And for something entirely different! Catch our nation's resident pandas, Qing Bao and Bao Li, munching on some bamboo at the National Zoo. The best part? These are all free experiences.
